Living Lines Library

Sorry for the delay, started a new job in designing and animating casino games. I will continue to post relative and inspiring posts about animation, concept art, user design and experience on this blog for inspiration. Thanks to all for following.

When you get a chance, check this website out. It features hundreds and hundreds of pencil tests from the animated movies that we love. We found it easy to get lost in the work, its absolutely marvelous. It also features documentaries and production artwork from the last fifty years.

All we need to make this better, is a way for Youtube viewers to step an animation so we can view a piece frame by frame. I know there are some plugins that exist, that add the controls via your browswer, but the controls I've seen are inconsistent and don't always appear in the ui.

Definitely check it out.

Below is an example from Glen Keane's found on the site.

Donnie Yen vs. Bruce Lee CG Animation

This is actually quite entertaining if you are a fan. They did a good job in capturing the fighting styles of both fighters as they are quite believable.

"Paperman": Animated Short

If you watched "Wreck It Ralph" in theatres, you are familiar with the "Paperman" animation that played before the film. Nice for the guys at Disney to post it online so all of us can enjoy it. I also included a featurette below that describes the look and feel of the movie. Its nice to see CG getting a facelift. The sets and characters look as if they are done by hand, the textures and linework are quite detailed creating a new look and feel and the story is charming. Well done.

Appearing this holiday season - ha ha, we can't wait. If the picture below doesn't make you want to watch the movie, just stay home. Where else can you see Bowser, Zangief, M. Bison, and Pac Man ghosts (just to name a few) sitting in a support group. Genius!

Animation Breakdown: 11 Sec. Club Entry

Marcus Tee is an animator coming from Malaysia. We are happy that he posted his animation process in this entry to the 11 Second Club Animation Contest. Pay close attention to how he's breaking everything down, like his key poses, timing, then breaking down the movement to his extremes and refinement. His process is below, its pretty nice, simple and easy to follow.

  1. Rough Thumbs (Posing and Preplanning)
  2. Key Poses - General Blockin (Stepped)
  3. Extremes - Anticipation and followthrough keyframes
  4. In Betweening - 1st round of refinement (Spline)
  5. Hand and wrist animation
  6. Face and Lip Sync Animation
  7. Polishing (Curve Smoothing)
  8. Tie Animation (2ndary Motion and Overlapping Animation)

Be sure to check out his site here >>

And of course his demo reel...

God of War III: Making Chimera

Chimera in Greek mythology is a creature that is part lion, goat and part snake, and is featured as one of the main obstacles in the Playstation's God of War III video game. This featurette is something that you will enjoy and learn a lot from. It features various interviews from all of the designers who contributed to the creature and it takes you through the many cool stages of development from conceptual development, modeling, animation and even fighting strategy - something you don't see very much these days.

Very nice and inspiring! Those of you who got a feeling for this conceptual art stuff, this is what you got to do, can you match this stuff? Yes, of course you can...just don't stop.

Fire it up and keep going! See ya'll at the top.

Ali - thanks for the heads up, and congrats on graduating.

Joshua Slice: Character Animation Demo Reel

Joshua Slice Demo Reel 2009 from joshua slice on Vimeo.

Hey Guys, here's a nice example of character animation. Pay close attention to his moving holds, his use of arcs and variety of timing. All of the these together make for seamless smooth movement as he transitions from one pose to the next. He's also got a kick butt last name. "Slice" it up.

Keep up the great work.
