Digital Background Painting: Mech Winter Part II

This is part 2 of 2 video tutorial that covers various methods for digitally painting a background on a rendered CG image. It covers various techniques for adding texture detail and snow on to an existing background to create a winter scene. We will be using Photoshop's Hue/Saturation and Curves for this demo to help us create atmosphere. For more of an organic feel, and be sure you use a WACOM tablet. Have fun and let me know how it goes. Happy Painting!

Here is the original file if you would like to try to paint on it.

"Brink" - Cinematic Trailer

This "Brink" trailer is pretty awesome. What makes this game pretty unique is its focus on free running, which is something that I'm a big fan of. The controls are quite sensitive, they would have to be if you want to incorporate some "free running" moves. Enjoy! Hey Mr. Key, thanks for the heads up. The game looks great, but I can watch this trailer over and over again.

You can watch an example of the gameplay below.

Bounty: "Bring It"

Some comic relief for you if you are working hard / studying in school. Its a silly, well produced music video of two Bounty scientists rapping about their product. Its actually pretty cool. Its got a catchy tune and it helps that these guys are super hammy. Be careful when you watch, the song is still not out of my head.

The best line in the whole video though....

"Bounty, Bounty, almost as strong as a Canadian Mountie"

Classic!

Fire it up and enjoy!

Digital Background Painting: Mech Winter Part I

This video tutorial covers Part 1 of 2. In this segment, we cover how to paint a simple realistic background using Photoshop over a CG render. It covers mental ray, mountains, atmospheric perspective, edges, texture and lighting effects. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we learn how to turn our generated image into a snow swept landscape.

Feel free to download the image used in this demo below. Happy painting everyone!

Azo - Showreel 2009

This guy is straight up incredible! Simply nuts! And highly entertaining. His profession is an animator for a game company and uses many of his moves as reference for his animations. Way cool.

If you're middle aged, don't be trying this stuff at home. You could pull something!

Enjoy!

Shogun Assassin: Color Comp

In my Background Design class today, we watched the movie "Shogun Assassin" for its staging and art direction. We repainted a scene from the movie in Photoshop to understand and practice:

  • Layer Breakdown
  • Atmospheric Perspective
  • Painting Grass: Background, Midground and Foreground
  • Complimentary Color Schemes

The painting presented here was my demonstration piece in front of the class.

Star Wars: In Concert - Las Vegas, May 29

HUGE....A massive 100 member orchestra, 30 member choir, the largest HD LCD screen ever to be hoisted on to the stage, a arena sized laser light show, along with the original costumes, production artwork and matte paintings to celebrate the music and mythology of Star Wars. "Star Wars in Concert" is currently touring Europe and will begin its reign over the United States in May. It will be in Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena May 29th.

Be sure to check the Star Wars in Concert website, and Tour Dates

Many years ago, while still in college, a large group of us (Shrunkenheadman Club Members), stopped playing video games at the arcade so we could save enough money to visit and experience the traveling Star Wars exhibit at San Francisco's Moscone Center. I remember being in line for hours - around the block just to get in. Once we got in, the show was simply amazing. It was one of the most memorable exhibitions I ever attended. Be sure to check it out when it comes to your star system.

Enjoy!

Vikram Mohan: Character Animation Reel

Vikram's demo reel showcases great examples of animation we normally do in our beginning to intermediate animation classes, such such as: The Gear Change, Choice, Walkcyle, and Take. His animation examples of Choice, Curiosity and Chase are great too. His movement and staging is clear, he has a great sense of timing, orchestrating fast with slow movement and demonstrates a subtle yet effective use of overlapping action in his character's heads. Hey Vikram, keep up the great work and best of luck in all you do.
