Gustav Hoegen: 2012 Animatronic Showreel

All we can say is Wow! One thing to consider, are some of the benefits of using animatronics vs. cg. What do you think? Here, we agreed that an animatronic character, if done well, would be a better costar for an actor. The actor has the ability to react in a realistic fashion to a character that he sees right in front of him because the character has volume, one can make eye contact therefore creating a better connection. There are ways around this, but its usually up to the vision of the director to make sure that the connection is believable. In CG, the character is added in post, sometimes the reaction of an actor is not as believable. We wonder however, if it's cost and time effective, other than that we believe this work to be top notch. Nice job Gustav. Keep firing it up!

Kia Hamsters w LMFAO

Everybody's Shufflin - Including you when you see this. The new Kia Hamsters rock out against a large post apocalyptic group of invading robots. This commercial is totally hitting a certain demographic...you, the video game lovin, destroy and blow up everythin, action movie watchin, spaceship gunnin, giant robot lovin, laser shootin, party music playin, saggin clothes wearin, wish we could dance, type people (and I didn't even say Kia lovin). In short - fun to watch.

Portal 2: Rollover Ad and MSN Review

A new hover ad unit...hover over the image above to see what happens. At first, I thought this to be invasive, but its not so bad. When the large screen opens up however, I was hoping to see a larger view of the movie, the movie is still quite small. I'm not sure if there is much value in the static text and imagery surrounding the video. Make the video bigger.

And below is the MSNNBC Todd Kendrick review of the game. The game from what I hear is quite unique and fun - if you can figure out the puzzles. The animation and voice acting also looks very sweet. I'll probably check it out, seems like a wild experience.

Audi Robots

Ever see a video on Youtube, and you like it so much that you want to watch it again, but you can't because you don't remember the URL, and no matter what search criteria you type in Youtube (in this case, audi and robot), it doesn't appear. This video is the "one" that I couldn't find.

Now that its here, its going to stay permanently in this blog. Not only is it cool to look at, its unique, it shows great animation, camera work, and a seamless composite (putting everything together). I'm also a sucker for slick white shiny robots.

ED 209: Classic Robocop Scene

Saw Robocop appear on Netflix the other day, and I immediately fast forwarded to the most memorable scene of the movie - it has been years since I've seen this movie. The scene features a malfunctioning robot animated via stop motion, great sound, and visual effects squib work (this is the bloody explosion stuff happening on the guy's body).

Also is a documentary about the scene called "Making ED 209), as well as the latest poster for the scheduled remake.

Gatchaman: 2011

In the 80's, the show show was called G-Force. Well, we all know that the name was taken over by a bunch of hampsters, which is okay by me. Gatchaman is a little more catchy wouldn't you say. If you are big fans of the TV show from back in the day, I'm sure you'll enjoy this when it comes out.

Iron Man 2 : Suit Design Featurette

Attention to detail plays a big part in the look and feel of a film - everything MUST have a purpose, even when we don't "see" it. In designing Iron Man's armor, pay close attention to the inner workings of the armor and how that lends itself to the aesthetic appeal of the overall design. The thought process displayed in this featurette is what good character design is made of.

Panic Attack: Vis. FX Armageddon

Just watch this quick little movie (Attaque de Paniquo). It begins quietly but ends in a loud roar. There was a lot of work put into this piece, I think the background plates were beautifully shot, they show great compositions, and effective compositing, which means that the bad stuff you see happening all over the place is pretty convincing. Let us know what you think and enjoy!

Iron Man 2: Trailer

Okay folks, this is looking pretty slick. Great to see the two suits together. Mickey Rourke looks excellent here as our villain, glad to know those "Wrestler" muscles can come in handy for something else. At about 2:09 we're wondering what's chasing Ironman.

New Longer "Avatar" Movie Trailer & Official Site

As news of the premiere draws closer, I always find it interesting to see how the producers choose to market a film in preparation for a particular season. In this case, the Holiday Season. Notice how different each of these trailers are. Which one do you like best?

Pay attention to how different the tone is for each. I think you will like watching both as each gives a little more insight into the story, something very important to us. Amazing Transforming Bumblebee Costumes

Lots of blogposts this month. But I had to post to show my students on Monday. This is actually way cool, be sure you stick around for the transformation at the end. If you look carefully, he's got his headlights working too. Doesn't it look uncomfortable? Who cares, its still genius and cool.

Transformers Franchise History

Here's a little documentary that we stumbled upon about the Transformers franchise. With the premiere of Transformers 2 fast approaching we thought a little history lesson would wet your appetite. For those of you who remember the very time the toys came out, you would have to agree that these were the greatest baby sitters, keeping all of us out of trouble, but also away from "the girls", which is okay, its just that some of us haven't grown out of the toys yet.

This documentary features its Japanese origins, the first Transformers toy commercial premiere, information about the different generations (Transformers Generation I and II), clips from the various animated series (Dinobots), and its transition into the 2007 live action piece. Its a nice little hit that's well worth checking out.

My favorite part of this clip, was seeing Soundwave. The cool "Walkman" style Decepticon who had the two cassette tapes that would launch and transform into a Buzzsaw and Ravage. I'll have to admit that I lost interest after the Dinobots, but in the film, we can see how the remnants of those types of ideas play a huge role in giving the robots variety.

Robot Fish Underwater

 

Okay, I saw this and was amazed. The fish's movement is simple but looks extremely realistic especially when viewed in the water. The randomness and variety in the way the fish moves also looks just right. Nice project guys.

I wonder what's next. Perhaps develop Ai in the fish to enable it to catch a lure. Imagine programming a "fight" response once this fish is caught...it sounds like a lot of fun.
